There comes a point where your skin just doesn’t feel like your skin anymore.

It can happen gradually or feel like it’s come out of nowhere. One day your usual moisturiser is enough, and the next your skin feels tight by mid-morning. Makeup sits differently. Your complexion looks a little flatter, a little duller, and no matter what you use, it doesn’t quite feel the same.

This is one of the most common shifts women experience in midlife, and it is not random. It is a direct result of changes happening beneath the surface of the skin.

Why Skin Feels Drier in Perimenopause

As we move through perimenopause and menopause, estrogen levels begin to decline. estrogen plays a significant role in maintaining skin hydration, supporting collagen production and helping the skin retain its structure and elasticity. When those levels drop, the skin loses its ability to hold onto moisture as effectively as it once did. At the same time, natural oil production decreases, which means the skin’s protective barrier becomes weaker.

One of the biggest frustrations at this stage is that the products that used to work stop delivering the same results. Lightweight creams that once felt hydrating can start to feel like they disappear into the skin without doing much at all. This is because midlife skin often needs hydration at a deeper level, along with ingredients that help strengthen and support the skin barrier itself.
